The story behind this design
This design borrows from eighteenth-century printing rather than from flags: oxidized parchment tones, a hand-set serif, and a thin double rule boxing the dates. The red is deliberately brick rather than scarlet. It was drawn to look like a document somebody kept, which is a different mood from the celebratory covers beside it.
