The story behind this design
The map is reduced to an outline with the state borders left out, so at tumbler scale it reads as one recognizable shape rather than a tangle of lines. The commemorative lettering follows the lower edge of the map instead of sitting in a straight line beneath it, which keeps the two elements as a single mark. A thin double rule circles the glass above and below the design, the framing device that tells you this is a commemorative piece rather than a souvenir.
