The story behind this design
The face is assembled rather than drawn. Slabs and ribbons of paint cross the features, so a cheek might be magenta and the jaw teal, and the portrait only resolves once you stop reading it as skin. Up close it is abstraction; from across a room it is unmistakably a woman looking slightly past the viewer. That shift is the whole point of the piece, and it is why the larger square sizes suit it best.
