The story behind this design
The abstract faces here are drawn with the fewest possible marks, a line for a profile and two dots for eyes, which is what lets them repeat across a whole garment without becoming a crowd of characters. Leaving the pocket clear was a deliberate part of the design: it gives the initials somewhere to sit where the busy print does not compete with them, so a monogram reads as a monogram rather than as one more motif.
