The story behind this design
Each face is drawn without lifting the pen, so a brow runs into a nose and a nose runs into a jaw with no break anywhere in the stroke. That constraint is what gives the profiles their odd, slightly wrong proportions, and it is why they read as shapes first and people second. The line is a single weight throughout and there is no shading at all, so the whole cover stays quiet next to a patterned one.
