The story behind this design
Books drawn flat look like boxes, so these are stacked with the spines turned at slightly different angles and the pages given a visible block edge, which is what makes a pile of rectangles read as books. The laurel is kept thin and single-stemmed rather than dense, so it frames without crowding the hour ring. Navy and gold is the palette of an old library binding, and on acrylic the gold sits with a slight sheen that paper would not give it.
