The story behind this design

Draining the colour out of a flag changes what it says: without the red and blue it reads as an object rather than a statement. The stripes become tonal bands and the stars sit as pale flecks against near-black, closer to a photograph than an emblem. On a Black ground the whole thing nearly disappears until you are close enough to look properly.
