The story behind this design

A crest works by hierarchy: shield, banner, figure, each given its own band of space so the eye takes them in order. The one here is drawn with a hand-cut edge rather than a vector-clean one, which is what keeps it from looking like a template, and the banner is left wordless so the design belongs to whoever wears it. On Berry the single dark ink goes almost plum, which is the colorway the crest was drawn against.
