The story behind this design
The feather is painted wet so the barbs break up at the edges, and the ink is allowed to pool where a real nib would have dripped. Indigo and warm gray carry the whole border, which keeps the attention on the shape of the plume rather than on color. The subject and the medium agree with each other here: a pad about handwriting, painted by hand.
