The story behind this design
Shells are best drawn one at a time, the way a collector lays them out on a windowsill, because each species has a different spiral and the interest is in the comparison. A scallop, a whelk, a cowrie and two starfish are arranged around the face at different angles, with pale sand between them doing the work of a background. Everything is kept in bleached coral, cream and a faint gray-blue, which is what coastal decor actually looks like rather than bright seaside colors.
