The story behind this design

The pattern was poured rather than drawn, with bands of color bleeding into one another and no hard edges anywhere in it. That works on a lid because there is no motif to crop awkwardly at the rim, and the eye reads the whole surface at once. The palette runs hot through pink, orange and violet, which is a deliberate contrast with the plain wood it is printed on.
