The story behind this design
Each motif is boxed into its own square, which turns a floral drawing into something closer to a sampler or a tile panel. Alternating a heart square with a flower square gives the grid a rhythm, and the squares are sized so the pattern does not get cut awkwardly by the lid's edge. Color is kept to three or four flat tones per square, so the grid reads cleanly on wood.
