The story behind this design
Botanical plates put the plant first and add a bird only where the composition needs a focal point, and that is the order kept here: the foliage builds the whole field, and three birds are dropped in where the branches leave a gap. The greens are held to sage and a deeper olive, with the cream ground doing the lighting, so nothing in the pattern shouts. Woven rather than printed, the leaf edges soften slightly, which suits a design borrowed from engraving.
