The story behind this design
Southwestern weaving usually builds outward from a central axis, which fights a long thin pillow. This design turns that on its side instead: the stepped bands march horizontally and the diamonds shrink toward the two ends, so the eye runs the length of the cushion. The colors are the earth range of that tradition, clay and ochre against a pale ground, and the pattern stays dense enough not to look stretched.
