The story behind this design
Ferns are the oldest thing in most gardens and they draw beautifully because a single frond is already a pattern, each pinna repeating the shape of the whole leaf. Setting them over pebbles gives the composition a floor, so the fronds look laid down rather than floating. The greens are held back towards sage and the pebbles kept to warm grey, which is the palette of a shaded corner rather than a border in full sun.
