The story behind this design
Butterflies are drawn here with their wings open and flat rather than in flight, which lets the wing patterning become the subject instead of the silhouette. They are set at varying angles so no row forms, and a few are placed partly off the edge of the print so the pattern reads as continuing beyond the garment. On satin the wing markings pick up the sheen unevenly, which gives them a faint iridescence.
