The story behind this design

Crescents are drawn at two orientations, some cupped upward and some lying on their backs, so the repeat never settles into an obvious grid. Stars are small and unevenly spaced between them, with a few placed so close to a crescent that they read as caught inside it. Deep indigo carries the ground while the moons are held in a pale bone tone, which keeps the contrast high enough to read from across a room.
