The story behind this design

A tree ornament is seen at arm's length and usually half in shadow, so the reindeer scene is drawn with strong contrast and very little fine detail. The circular format does most of the composing: the reindeer sits inside the disc with the scene curving around behind it, which means the design has no corners to crop and reads the same however the ribbon lets it turn.
