The story behind this design
Candy canes are a diagonal motif by nature, and a diagonal repeat is forgiving on a parcel: the pattern never has to line up squarely with an edge to look deliberate. Keeping the canes at a single scale and letting the white of the paper carry between them stops the red from going heavy across a large box.
