The story behind this design
The gag rests on a joke about time: the one creature with a genuine claim to missing an earlier era is complaining about missing a decade that ended barely twenty-five years ago. Flat blocks of color, a chunky speech-bubble outline and a bouncy cartoon posture pull the drawing straight out of a Saturday-morning cartoon cel.
