The story behind this design
The horse is drawn head and neck only, turned three-quarters towards the viewer, with the mane given more movement than the rest of the animal. Most of the tonal work goes into the face — the flat plane down the nose, the hollow above the eye — while the background stays plain so nothing pulls attention from it.
