The story behind this design
The canyon is a hard subject because its scale is the whole point and cloth gives you no scale at all. The drawing solves it with stacked horizontal bands — rim, terrace, shadow, river — that repeat downward until the eye reads depth instead of pattern. Black is the only ground that works: the strata have to emerge from darkness the way they do at dawn.
