Stripes are the one pattern that changes character with orientation: stood on end a striped cushion looks taller, laid flat it looks wider, and the same cover does both jobs depending on how it is thrown. Drawing them by hand rather than ruling them keeps small irregularities in the line, which is what stops the cushion looking like ticking fabric.
