The story behind this design
Two motifs of different shape solve a problem that one cannot: a round ornament and a tall spruce occupy space differently, so alternating them fills a surface without leaving the regular gaps a single shape always produces. The ornaments are drawn hanging, with short lengths of thread, which gives them a top edge and stops them floating. The spruce are rendered in a darker green than the ornament highlights, so the pattern has a background and a foreground rather than sitting flat.
