The story behind this design
Putting an animal into an all-over pattern is harder than putting in an object, because a reindeer has a direction and a repeat makes the direction obvious. These face several ways and are spaced further apart than the trees, so the eye reads them as individuals in a wood rather than as a marching motif. The spruce fill the space between and are drawn at three different heights, which gives the scene a sense of depth that a flat festive print normally loses.
