The story behind this design

The design puts mugs on a mug. A row of cups in mismatched colors sits against a winter backdrop, each one drawn slightly differently, which gives the eye something to track as the cup is turned in the hand. Because the glaze underneath is a deep maroon, red or black, the illustration was drawn with bright flat color rather than soft shading, so it keeps its edges against a dark ground.
