The story behind this design

Printing pale artwork on a black glaze is the reverse of the usual problem: there is no white ink under the drawing, so every line has to earn its brightness. This skull is therefore drawn with heavy contrast and very little mid-tone, which is what gives it the look of a woodcut or a photocopy.
