Owls sitting in a row is a composition that wants to be symmetrical, so the branch was drawn at a diagonal instead and the birds spaced unevenly along it, some facing out and some half-turned. Cropping the garment cuts the branch at both side seams, which is why the drawing is built to continue rather than resolve - the eye assumes the tree carries on past the shirt. The two stitching options change it more than they should: white outlines the panels, black lets the branch run.
