Each spiral starts tight and opens as it turns, so what reads at a glance as a dot resolves into a starburst up close. White on charcoal keeps the contrast high without going to pure black, which would have made the top read as formal. The spirals are spaced unevenly on purpose; a regular grid would have turned an illustrated mark into a manufactured one.
