The story behind this design
Peonies are drawn at two scales here: a few large heads opened flat to show every ruffled layer, and smaller rosebuds filling the gaps between them. The palette is powder pink and butter cream with sage leaves, and the shadows are warm rather than grey, which keeps the whole thing in the register of a faded 1940s dressmaking print rather than a modern floral.
