The story behind this design
Camellias are the most formal of the garden flowers, with petals that spiral in neat concentric rings, and the painting keeps that order rather than loosening it. Each bloom is a flat pink at the edge deepening to carmine at the center. The glossy leaves are nearly as important as the flowers, drawn stiff and dark the way camellia foliage actually is.
