The story behind this design
Peonies collapse open as they age, and that late-stage looseness is what this painting goes for rather than the tight bud: petals fall outward, a few drop away entirely, and the centers show. The matte surface suits it, because a gloss would sharpen edges that are meant to be soft. Pinks are kept dusty rather than candy-bright.
