The wave is drawn the sashiko way, as rows of short even stitches that build a curve without ever drawing one. Each line follows the one before it at a fixed distance, so the pattern reads as water moving in bands rather than as a single breaking wave. White thread on indigo denim is the original pairing, and it still gives the cleanest contrast.
