A placemat is the one piece of table linen that is guaranteed to be seen, because a plate covers the center and leaves a border of it showing all through a meal. This design puts its strongest color at the edges for that reason, with the leaves crowding the border and thinning toward the middle where the plate will sit. The palette runs full autumn: scarlet, amber, russet and a little green.
