The story behind this design
The road is the device here: it enters at the bottom edge and narrows into the trees, pulling the eye straight through the middle of the frame. Trees either side are reduced to vertical blocks of ochre and rust with no drawn detail, which is what makes the piece read abstract. The receding road is why this composition works at 12 by 9 inches where a wide landscape would not.
