The story behind this design
Daffodils are difficult to paint without sentimentality, because the yellow does so much shouting on its own. This painting answers that by dropping the background to a muted neutral and letting the trumpets sit slightly out of focus, so the picture reads as a remembered spring rather than a botanical study. The brushwork is loose enough that stems break and reconnect, which is what keeps it from looking like a photograph of flowers.
