The story behind this design
Lakshmi is nearly always shown with gold, and the trick this print pulls is to keep the gold warm without letting it turn brassy: it is laid over a rose and coral ground rather than over white. The lotus opens outward at the base of the image so the petals lead the eye upward, and the whole composition is symmetrical, which is what gives a devotional print its calm.
