The story behind this design
Damask was woven before it was ever printed, and this pattern keeps the logic of the weave: a symmetrical scrolling motif that repeats on a strict grid, with the ornament drawn only in outline so the white of the napkin reads as the ground rather than the figure. The gold is warm and slightly antiqued rather than bright metallic. On a folded cocktail napkin only a quarter of the pattern shows, which is why the repeat was kept small.
