The story behind this design
Stripes on a high top have a natural line to follow: the shoe already runs from toe to ankle, and a diagonal either agrees with that or fights it. These were set to agree, so the gold carries the eye upward and the shoe reads taller than it is. It is the oldest trick in footwear and it still works.
