The story behind this design

Printed gold is a problem, because real gold is a reflection rather than a color and ink cannot reflect. The solution here is to fake the highlight: the emblem carries a hard bright edge along its upper left and a deep bronze shadow along its lower right, which is what the eye actually uses to read metal. That is also why all four shirt colors are dark — a gold gradient on a pale ground reads as mustard.
