The story behind this design
A dark floral is not just a light floral with the brightness turned down; it has to be drawn for the dark or the flowers vanish. Here the roses are given a hard rim of a lighter red where a petal edge would catch light, and nothing else in the design is allowed that rim, so the blooms are the only thing the eye finds. The leaves are deliberately taken past green into near-black, which is what makes the whole print read as night rather than as dusk.
