Argyle came off a Campbell tartan and into knitwear in the 1920s, and it has carried a faint air of the golf course ever since. Rendering it in green rather than the usual navy or burgundy is the move that dates it differently, pushing it toward something closer to a 1970s library than a clubhouse.
