The story behind this design

Scarecrows only work as Halloween figures when they are left slightly wrong, so this one is drawn with the pole visible through the coat and the shoulders sitting at different heights. Crows are given no fear of it at all, which is the joke buried in the piece. The palette runs to burnt straw and a washed-out sacking grey, with a single crow inked solid black so the composition has somewhere to settle.
