The Dala horse started as a toy whittled by Swedish woodsmen in winter and ended up on every kitchen shelf in the country, which is a fair description of how folk motifs work. Knitting it flattens the carving into a silhouette, and the curling harness painted on the original becomes a simple band across the body.
