The story behind this design
Hibiscus has five broad petals and a long protruding stamen, which is a lot of detail for a card back, so the drawing simplifies it: petals become flat shapes and the stamen a single curved line. Deep green leaves fill between the blooms and give the pattern its density. The result is a tropical back that still reads cleanly when a hand is fanned.
