The story behind this design

Setting blue roses on a blue ground is a deliberate risk: there is very little contrast, so the flowers read as texture rather than as separate objects. That works on a placemat, where a plate is going to cover the middle anyway and the eye only catches the border. Yellow at the flower centres gives the design its one point of brightness.
