The story behind this design

The flowers are drawn open and flat rather than shaded, which keeps them legible even when a plate covers the centre of the mat. Blue carries most of the design, with yellow used sparingly at the flower centres so the eye has somewhere to land. On a wooden or white table the effect is fresh rather than formal.
