The story behind this design
A seventeen-size range is unusual and it changes how a design has to be drawn. The same artwork has to hold together at 6 by 8 inches on a desk and at 40 by 28 inches above a sofa, which rules out fine linework that would vanish at the small end and large flat areas that would look empty at the large end. The drawing is built in the middle register, where both survive.
