The story behind this design
There is no linework in this drawing at all. The leopard's face emerges purely from the placement of its rosettes, which cluster and thin out where the muzzle, brow and ears would be, leaving the eyes as the only two solid marks. Read it quickly and it is a pattern; look at it properly and the animal is staring back. That ambiguity is the whole point, and it is why the design was kept to one ink.
