Lions are usually drawn roaring; this one is drawn breathing. The mane becomes the compositional device, radiating outward like the lines of a mandala and turning the animal into something closer to a meditation symbol. Gold is the obvious ground for it, but on Heather Ice Blue the warm mane against a cold field is the better picture.
